April 2008: The Internal Screen at the Celtic Manor Resort, Newport
Windsor Glass has been working with local glass artist Sonia Hawking, to produce eight spectacular panels for the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.
In celebration of holding the Ryder Cup in 2010, the Celtic Manor has transformed their Owen’s restaurant, into a state of the art Michelin Crown restaurant with a complete refurbishment. The architect of the project approached Sonia at the end of February with a challenge. Eight panels, designed, agreed and made in a month, bearing in mind Easter was in the middle!
The Design
The burst of bevels spread over the two doors comes from the theme “a burst of flavour”. The colour strip running throughout the design links the two lots of four panels together and gives the space a colourful focus. The function of the panels is to create a private dining area adjacent to the main dining room with some elements transparent to arouse curiosity.
Graphics
The design was scanned into the computer and plotted out onto vinyl, which was then applied to the glass.
Sandblasting
One side of the double glazed unit was then sandblasted to give a milky white translucent effect, where the vinyl was the glass remained clear.
Bevels
Approximately two hundred bevels were applied to the other side of the double glazed unit, where the glass remained clear. This gave a very effective three dimensional peephole effect.
Double Glazing
The two sheets of glass were then double glazed using 18mm and 20mm spacer bars; with the sandblasting, bevels and unique fused pieces on the inside of the unit.
Installation
The panels were carefully installed by the experienced Chris Brayley of Chris-tal Clear Glazing, using a rubber beading method.
The finished panels were installed and ready for the first diners at the restaurant with a whole half an hour to spare. Sonia and the Celtic Manor Resort were thrilled with the end result. We at Windsor Glass believe this is a good example of how we can work with glass artists to turn commissions around in record speed time.
